Description
Buddha on Lotus Throne Fresco - Bagan, 2013
Detail of an 11th century Buddhist fresco at a temple in Bagan, Myanmar, depicting the Buddha sitting on a Lotus Throne. His hands are in the Bhumisparsha Mudra position. A mudra is a symbolic or ritual pose or gesture associated with the life of Buddha, often involving hands or fingers. Bhumisparsha comes from Sanskrit, meaning ‘Touching the Earth’; as the Buddha reaches enlightenment, he touches the Earth to bear witness of this event. The lotus flower is another potent symbol in Buddhism, representing purity, spiritual awakening and faithfulness.
