Description
Kep Crab Fishers - Kep, 2018
A female fisher brings ashore crab traps in the coastal seaside resort town of Krong Kep on Cambodia’s south-eastern shore. Kep’s development started in the early 1920s when the French discovered this sleepy fishing village on the Gulf of Thailand and a seafood market was erected to accommodate rich expats and tourists as well as wealthy locals and Khmer royalty. Today, the Kep Crab Market is a popular tourist attraction that is still authentically busy, bustling and chaotic.
Hungry diners can either buy their crabs directly from the fishers on the pier at the famous local Kep Crab Market and have them cooked on the spot for a small fee. You can grab a table inside the market if you purchase a drink or rice. If the chaos is too much or if you want to dine in a more relaxed setting, there is a row of seafood restaurants nearby, from basic crab shacks to authentic family restaurants and, in recent years, more upmarket dining options.
The crabs are most commonly steamed or stir-fried and are often served with another local delicacy: green peppercorns from the nearby town of Kampot.
