Description
Toul Sleng Prison I - Phnom Penh, 2020
Sunlight casts a shadow on the floor of a prison cell at the former Toul Sleng prison and interrogation centre (also known as S-21) in Phnom Penh, Cambodia. After the Khmer Rouge came to power in 1976, they transformed the Tuol Svay Pray High School into a prison where some 20,000 Cambodians were interrogated, tortured, locked up and, in many cases, killed. It is estimated that some 1.7 to two million Cambodians lost their lives during the Khmer Rouge’s bloody and violent reign from 1975 to 1979. Nowadays, the site houses the Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum, which serves as a grim, haunting reminder of Cambodia's violent past.
